Uncle Colin, what can I say....so many memories of holidays with the families, London to Brighton bike ride, you sunbathing when we popped over for dinner on a Sunday. The one thing I always remember you for is my nickname from you "hello Miranda" I can still hear you say it now. You will be sadly missed by us all and remembered in my heart forever. Grandad was an amazing man and will be sorely missed. He was unbelievably kind, generous, affectionate, welcoming, selfless, loving and dutiful - he was quite simply the perfect grandad, husband, father, and great grandad. Of course, perfection eludes all of us at times, and grandad was no exception. His sense of direction sometimes escaped him during various “short walks” (read: wild goose chases) up the beach on holidays in Barbados and Swanage to get ice cream. One hour of walking with three hungry grandchildren and still no ice cream… At least he made up for it with entertaining stories and jokes along the way. Grandad was the master of the long-form joke - although sometimes the jokes were so long-form I would get lost halfway through before the punchline. I’ll always remember the edgy yet educational ones he told us when we were younger - stalagmites go up, stalactites go down… Grandad was knowledgable and prescient about many things. The now seemingly imminent introduction of the “sin bin” in football addresses a long term bug bear of his. Meanwhile grandad had been rallying against the broadband, TV, energy and other utilities providers long before Martin Lewis made it fashionable to do so. Speaking of fashion, we must also remember that grandad was sporting a beard (and wearing socks with holes in…and eating food well beyond its use-by date) long before the hipsters and environmentalists came along. Grandad was incredibly generous with his time. I’ll always remember him taking us to play football during Christmas visits, and tennis during the summer visits - in between sunbathing in the garden of course (he didn’t need much invitation to get the deckchair out and whip his shirt off…) It makes me sad that Alice and Harry will not get to spend more time with their great grandad. But I hope that our children will get to know him more and more as we share our memories with them. We as a family will miss him very much.
